I've just completed the redesign of the front and rear gardens of a cottage in Sixpenny Handley which is on poor, chalky soil.
The rear garden uses reclaimed brick and flint walls along with pleached trees and espalier fruit trees to add height within the garden to reduce the impact of boundary walls and enhance privacy and interest. Two beds are raised up using rusted steel edging (concealed externally by box hedging) to provide a greater depth of soil for a tapestry of perennial 'naturalistic' planting.
A pool with concealed underwatering lighting features a stunning egg jar water feature and aquatic planting. The same style of pot is used as the centrepiece in a circle of evergreen grass Hakonechloa macra surrounded by a radiating pattern of quarry tiles set on edge. Seating is arranged around the garden to provide different places to pause and rest, and paths and a wrap-around lawn invite exploration of the divided up spaces.
