The existing garden in Shaftesbury, Dorset was laid mainly as brick-edged vegetable borders on a steep, south-facing slope. We were asked to create a relaxing garden where the client could entertain her love of plants.
The design for this garden in Shaftesbury, Dorset involved creating dynamic shapes and strong verticals to take guide the eye away from the enclosing fences all round.
A sandstone sett path edged with lavender, shaded for part of its length by a rose and clematis-covered pergola, swept around a lawn edged in brick to a decked seating area with views. From here lush swathes of perennials flowed down the garden towards the house broken only by the vertical accents of Italian cypress trees.
All the bricks used in the landscaping were reclaimed from the previous garden layout. And the many tons of topsoil removed to create a lower seating area were hand-barrowed through the terraced house via two rows of steps!
